There has always been strife between these species, tacitly alluded to in a fable by the storyteller, Aesop.
Now the battle comes to your favorite deck of playing cards!
Ravens Versus Foxes is a nice card game that combines aspects of Poker, Pinnacle, and War that tests the wits and cunning of two players.
Ages 10 and up
SETUP:
Decks
Take one deck of regular (or not so regular) playing cards and split it into three decks:
(One for Ravens (Spades), One for Foxes (Hearts) and a Treasure pile (Diamonds and Clubs).
Jokers are unused (for now).
Players choose which between Spades (Ravens) or Hearts (Foxes) and shuffle their cards.
GAMEPLAY:
Play Order
Players pull one card from the Treasure Deck, highest card wins, and the winner decides to be first or not. Both cards are placed on the bottom of the Treasure Deck.
Setup
Each player takes the first three cards from their deck and places one of their choice to their left (See Challenges). Both players place the remaining ones at the bottom of their decks and draw six more cards.
Rounds
Each round last as long until all six cards in players hands are used. Then they draw another six cards and start a new round.
Players each draw a card from the Treasure Deck and place it face up, then they choose a card from their hand to draw to place on top of it. Whoever has the higher card wins all four on the table.
Challenges/Duels
Challenges
Each player can challenge another for the spoils on the table by placing another card and saying “Challenge!”. The opposing player can decide to either place a card of equal/greater value, or not.
Duels
If both players lay down card of equal value, then a duel begins. At this point, players can place another card (cards put in reserve can be used). Highest one wins all cards.
Scoring
At the end of the round, all cards are tallied up to see who has the highest score. When both rounds are done, the winner is whoever has the most points. (See Table below)
ACE = 25
KING = 20
QUEEN = 13
JACK = 11
2 – 10 = Numerical value
